Vacation Puerto Morelos

Fist of all, it is important to know how the town is divided before you decide choosing a Puerto Morelos Airbnb. Take a moment and get familiar with the Puerto Morelos neighborhoods. Puerto Morelos has two main sections, separated by about two miles of mangroves.

As you exit the highway and enter to the Colonia, you will encounter a couple of small strip shops, supermarkets and various stores. If you venture further in, you will find a rather substantial neighborhood. This is the west side of Puerto Morelos and the area where most locals reside, along with a double handful of expats. This is the part away from the beach.

If you head to the other side of the highway, through a marshy mangrove area, you will dead-end into the Caribbean Sea and the other half of town. This enchanting village-like community comes complete with an old leaning lighthouse. This part of the town is filled with charming restaurants, memorable bars, a few small Puerto Morelos Airbnb, some low-rise condos, plenty of touristy shops. When people talk about Puerto Morelos, this is the area they are talking about.

Puerto Morelos

Portside – Downtown:

This area is on the east side of the Highway and is what is most familiar to tourists of Puerto Morelos. At its widest, it is 3 blocks deep from the beach. Every property in this area is close to the beach and is walking distance to the Town Square. Puerto Morelos Airbnb residential homes are found in this area, along with the Town Square and many of Puerto Morelos’s restaurants and shops. Public beach accesses in this neighborhood are plentiful and the beaches are groomed by the town of Puerto Morelos regularly.

Portside – North Area:

Heading north from the Town Square, this area begins at Hotel Desire and continues to the end of Puerto Morelos, approx. 5 km from downtown. This area is 2 blocks deep and feathers out to a single row of beachfront properties. It is primarily residential, with a few resort hotels. The privacy and tranquility of this area, along with its natural beaches entice many return guests.  All properties in this area will be close to the beach. If you decide not to rent a car, Guests enjoy walking the beach to Downtown, using taxis, or renting bicycles.

Portside – South Area:

Going south from the Town Square, this area begins at the commercial shipping pier and continues until the limits Puerto Morelos (and the northern border of Playa del Secreto). This is a growing area of Puerto Morelos Airbnb, but is enjoyed by many of our guests for its tranquil, natural beaches.  If you decide not to rent a car, Guests enjoy walking the beach to Downtown, using taxis, or renting bicycles.

Pescadores:

This includes the old village of the fisherman, called the “Pescadores”, along with new developments and subdivisions. Bike, Taxis, Rental Car, or Collectivo Minibus (in some areas) is a great way to navigate in the areas either side of the highway and to the Portside.

La colonia:

This neighborhood is everything west of the Highway. This includes the “Colonia”, which is the oldest part of the village of Puerto Morelos. You’ll find lots of local shops in this area. It includes the more remote, jungle area of the Zona Urbana, along with newer, numerous subdivisions. Bike, Taxis, Rental Car, or Collectivo Minibus (in some areas) is a great way to navigate in the areas either side of the highway and to the Portside.

Ruta de los Cenotes:

This area is west of the Highway. The road leading to the town of Leona Vicario is commonly known as the “Ruta de los Cenotes”/”Route to the Cenotes” due to the large number of cenotes that can be found alongside this road. Depending on where the property is located within this area, it can be anywhere from 5 -30 minutes driving time to Downtown Puerto Morelos. Rental Car is recommended.

Best Places to stay in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos basically has two centres. One is the area around the beach and the ZOCALO. There are many restaurants and cafes here and the proximity to the beach is very attractive. Accommodation is a little more expensive and the Chedrauri on the beach has a slightly better selection of food than the Chedrauri in the centre.

The other area we recommend, especially for low budget travellers, is the centre. The centre doesn’t stand out for its beautiful architecture but it is teeming with local shopping and cheap restaurants. The cheerful atmosphere of the locals does not give you the feeling that you are on the tourist Riviera Maya. For 30 MXP, you can take a taxi to the beach at any time or ride your bike (sunny weather permitting). Especially if you are thinking about a long-term stay, the centre is a good place to live.

Riviera Maya Mexico

In a few years, the Riviera Maya has become the second most important vacation destination for Quintana Roo, and one of the most attractive internationally.

Located at the eastern end of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Riviera extends from Puerto Morelos, 32 kilometers south of the Cancun International Airport, to the picturesque fishing village called Punta Allen, already within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

The Riviera Maya leaves behind the luxurious hotels, the large shopping centers and the modern nightclubs, but it has all the services for the comfort of tourists and all kinds of stores where one can find everything from beachwear to the finest jewelry.

The Riviera Maya is a new concept that exploits the cultural richness and beauty of the environment; Virgin and secluded beaches abound, marine life and wild animals, as well as archaeological remains, caverns, cenotes and underground rivers. The cenotes are of different sizes and depths, and in their crystal clear and refreshing waters you can snorkel and dive or take day trips.
